We're a city school.
Burke is one block from the Van Ness Metro (Red Line) and steps from multiple MetroBus lines. We also run morning "Burke Buses," with five stops, including Arlington, VA, and Suitland, MD. Others commute by foot, bike, scooter, and skateboard. In short, students can travel to school "on their own steam" – which is a great way to build independence.
Don't let the view from the street deceive you! Our campus spans three buildings, plus our pedestrian bridge and side yard, from the corner of Connecticut Avenue down to 2955 Upton Street. Our main athletic field (Howard Field) is just down the block, and our swim team crosses the street to practice at UDC Pool.
Moreover, our walkable location and proximity to transit means that classes often extend into the city. Our 6th and 9th grade science classes meet in Rock Creek Park, while our history faculty construct units around DC museums and special exhibits. Thanks to "open campus" for high schoolers, students can grab lunch in the neighborhood and just enjoy a nice walk.
