Trustee Spotlight
Throughout the year, we will be highlighting members of our Board of Trustees in the Beat and online. Kristen joined the Board in 2021, serves on the Development Committee, and served on the 2021-22 Head of School Search Committee.
What motivated you to join the Board?
Serving as a trustee allows me to give back, in meaningful ways, to a community that's been an important part of my son's life for the past five years. Just as Burke supports its students, the Board supports the School in realizing its mission and reaching its full potential. I also love diving into the history of the School and sharing in the Board experience with parents who I might not otherwise have the opportunity to know.
Tell us about a favorite memory as a Burke parent.
We've made a lot of great Burke memories since my son joined in 7th grade, but one of the most memorable has to be this year's Back to School Night. Our community has been through so much over the past few years. Seeing all those parents back in the building, and finally having the opportunity to be physically present in the high school classrooms, face-to-face with teachers, was so energizing — a real reaffirmation of why we chose Burke, and the caliber of its teachers and education.
What skills and experiences do you bring to the Board?
I served as a trustee for Aidan Montessori School for six years, through a major capital campaign, 50th anniversary, strategic plan, and head of school search, and led a number of fundraising events over the past 15 years. Professionally, I have experience in product development, branding, marketing, retail, and all the intricacies of small business ownership. I'm currently a photographer specializing in documenting the work of nonprofits.
Do you have any advice for new families looking to get involved?
Attend all the social events you can! And volunteer when your schedule allows, even for small efforts like helping stuff annual giving mailings. I think parents are eager to reconnect with each other, and everyone wins when families feel invested in the whole school experience.
