Throughout the year, we will be highlighting members of our Board of Trustees in the Burke Beat and online. The parent of a Burke "lifer" Tommie D. P'22 currently co-chairs the Equity & Inclusion Committee and will conclude her Board term in June 2023.
What did you enjoy most about serving on the board?
As a Board member, I learned a great deal about, and therefore appreciate more fully, the important and hard work our Head of School, faculty, and staff do to make Burke such a special place. It was a unique challenge to serve on the Board during the pandemic, the transition in Head of School from Damian [Jones] to Steve [McManus], and the events of April 22, but it also was a great privilege to participate in the many consequential decisions the Board had to make during that time. Most of all, I enjoyed collaborating with my fellow Board members, nearly all of whom are current and former Burke parents and alumni, learning about their journeys, and witnessing their dedication to the school.
What's your fondest memory as a Burke Alum parent?
My fondest memory is Graduation (2022), not only because my son graduated after having been at Burke since 6th grade, but also because the ceremony and the spirit of the day was a perfect encapsulation of all that Burke is. The ceremony was student centered, with students' talents and voices on display along with a graduation speaker who exemplified Burke’s dedication to principles of social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion. The day was a beautiful reflection of how authentically and enthusiastically our students care about, encourage, and celebrate each other.
What can others do to get involved in the Burke community?
I found that our family’s years at Burke were made so much more rich and meaningful by my participation in many aspects of the life of the school. I encourage others to attend events planned for parents, join a Board committee (which does not require Board membership) and consider exploring joining the Board. I also encourage parents to support the school's efforts to increase its ability to offer financial aid by donating what and when you can and participating in the annual Auction for Financial Aid – so that more children from many different backgrounds and financial means can participate in the Burke experience.
