Class & Club Spotlight - December 2024

From DNA to PCR
To wrap up the fall trimester, Advanced Research in Molecular Biology students hosted a poster presentation for peers and parents. While investigating the distribution of Wolbachia (common bacterium) in insect populations, students learned molecular biology techniques, including DNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and DNA sequencing. Pictured, center: research by Sam H. Math Mavens
Jenn C. (Math) reports, "On November 16, twelve students in grades 9-12 competed in the national American Mathematics Competition (AMC). This 75-minute exam is designed to challenge students, strengthen creative problem-solving skills, and foster a love of mathematics." This year, Burke's top participants were Nate S '26 (AMC12) and Jack G. '27 (AMC10).

Welcome to the Histo-Remix
Fall play cast and crew members recently participated in "Teens Behind the Scenes" at the National Theatre. They enjoyed the national touring production of SIX: the musical and then participated in a post-show talkback with the dramaturg and several cast members.

Service Spotlight
Before Thanksgiving break, Queer Students Alliance (QSA) hosted a two-day crafts & bake sale, including handmade bracelets and plushies, in support of SMYAL. Founded in DC in 1984, SMYAL is a local nonprofit dedicated to empowering LGBTQ+ youth ages 6-24.
