How have you moved forward in your educational journey in college?
I’ve been taking a number of focused classes for my major and minor, such as a civil engineering graphics class. Additionally I’ve explored a ton of different fields of study that I never expected I would enjoy, such as music technology and environmental engineering. One great aspect of college is the amount of extracurriculars available that expand on educational concepts. For instance, I am a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers at Georgia Tech and am on our Timber Strong team, which focuses on creating a small, load-bearing building entirely of mass timber. We then get to compete with other universities across the country!
What is one way that Burke prepared you, academically or personally, for college?
Pursuing leadership, whether that be starting my own affinity group or leading a club, throughout my time at Burke has prepared me for so many skills needed in college. Educationally, it has helped me when collaborating with other students as well as taking initiative in studying, but personally it has helped me get involved in some of my favorite activities. I am a member of a selective program within Outdoor Recreation Georgia Tech called CORE, which is a first year leadership program that focuses on jumpstarting first-year students into high level and high skill positions within different “sports.” I am currently an instructor in training for whitewater kayaking and rock climbing and am pursuing my Wilderness First Responder certification. Through this, I help lead, and eventually will lead trips with participants from the Tech community in these different sports!
What should Burke juniors and seniors keep in mind during the process?
College isn’t just about academics. Skills for life get taught in many different ways, so maintaining a good work-life balance is key for having a super amazing college experience. While I love my academics, I also think that being involved in WREK Radio and ORGT have been equally as enriching to my experience.
