Report from the Court: US Supreme Court

Ginger reports, "The case, McIntosh v. U.S., explores whether a district court's failure to enter a criminal forfeiture order in a timely manner means the government's order is no longer valid. While the nature of the case was a bit obscure, we enjoyed witnessing the justices and attorneys in action. Eight of the nine justices asked questions. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson's questions really got to the heart of the matter, while Justice Neil Gorsuch’s queries suggested that he might have argued the case differently than the attorneys. It was thrilling to be in the Justices' presence, especially given how many high-profile cases the Court is deciding this term."

 

For their final project, students are predicting how the Court will rule in some of the cases on their docket. Bailee C. '24 correctly predicted that the Supreme Court would reverse the Colorado Supreme Court's decision to remove former President Trump from the ballot based on a reading of Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment. The Court is expected to make a decision in McIntosh, and the other cases, by June or July.
